HOME SHARE
Please note that this project is on hold due to the covid-19 virus. We look forward to launching when we are able to share homes!
Home Share is a project begun in 2019, matching people who have space in their homes with people experiencing poverty who are seeking affordable housing and shared accommodation. The program provides a matching service and ongoing support to ensure that the home-sharing relationships are good ones.
This program is part of NHCT's response to our local housing crisis, where rental housing is in very tight supply and prices are rising dramatically. It operates in co-operation with the Bancroft Community Family Health Team and the North Hastings Community Integration Association.
Key Core Project Principles:
• Creating safety without onerous bureaucracy and barriers
• Community-driven with a commitment to intergenerational opportunities (housing youth with seniors)
• Creating a model that is collaborative, accessible and inclusive
• Flexible throughout, trauma informed (non-judgemental, meet people where they are at)
• Recognizing historical/systemic power abuses and oppression, and commiting to education and knowledge sharing to build inclusion (to address racism and oppression in our community)
• Creative/Innovative/Resilient –We are an under-resourced community in terms of income (below the provincial average), with limited employment opportunities, a housing crisis, and food scarcity. But we are rich in creative, resilient responses to poverty and injustice with amazing generosity of people in terms of sharing resources, time and expertise
